Green style

Visitors to our shop, Eco Age, often remark on the fact that we apparently have a garden growing vertically on our outside walls. At the moment it’s a little unusual for Chiswick High Street but I’m hoping vertical growing will become increasingly normal. I’m afraid I missed the World Green Roof Congress held in London last week – we can’t get to everything! But it did remind me what a good idea green roofs are especially in urban areas, converting dead space to growing and promoting biodiversity, but also slowing rainfall. We now experience increased heavy rainfall urban areas (predicted to get worse with climate change), coupled with increasing amounts of concrete. The result is a lot of flooding. Green roofs planted with sedum and grasses provide absorbent surfaces that slow down and manage these deluges.
