AIDS today
Did you know that AIDS is now the leading cause of death worldwide, among those aged 15-59? It's just over twenty years since the first clinical evidence of AIDS was reported and in that time more than 20 million people have died from the disease.
Today, there are approximately 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide and about a quarter of those are aged 15-24. Most of them don't know they are carrying the virus.
Many people still believe that AIDS is only a problem that affects certain parts of the world - but the figures prove otherwise...
To make it even clearer, in 2005:
Close to 5 million people were newly infected with the virus in 2005.
The increase in the proportion of women being affected by the epidemic continues. In 2005, 17.5 million women were living with HIV one million more than in 2003.
AIDS epidemic claimed 3.1 million [2.83.6 million] lives in 2005; more than half a million (570 000) were children.

Educating young people has been targeted as a key strategy in altering the course of this epidemic.
